Fern Lodge
Located on the corner of State Highway 3 (Matai Street) and Kelly Street in Inglewood, and 15km southeast of New Plymouth, stands the Inglewood Hotel – one of Inglewood’s oldest buildings. The original Inglewood Hotel was constructed on this site in 1875 when Inglewood was just a clearing within bush land. This hotel was removed from the site in early 1905, and re-erected a little further down Kelly Street, near Cutfield Street. Following relocation, it was renovated, and reopened as a bakery.
In January 1905, construction of the new Inglewood Hotel commenced. During construction, a temporary bar was set up in the nearby sample rooms to service locals and visitors. On 1 July 1905 it was reported that the new hotel was almost complete ready for guests with only wallpaper and final touches to be done. Not long after the Hotel opened its doors and adorned a full-height veranda, although this has since been removed. Today the Inglewood Hotel continues to thrive as a restaurant and bar, affordable accommodation and available for private functions. It’s a family restaurant. It’s a local pub. It’s your home away from home.
